Our debate today works with the article titled Does crop diversification lead to climate-related resilience? Improving the theory through insights on practice from 2022, by Ronnie Vernooy, published in the Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems journal.
This is a great preparation to our next interview with Kamogelo Thumankwe in episode 454 talking about resilience in urban food supply chains.
Since we are investigating the future of cities, I thought it would be interesting to see the impact of crop diversification on agricultural stability and its potential to build climate resilience. This article argues that while integrating diverse crops is vital for climate adaptation, it must be supported by stronger social institutions and policies to facilitate a global food transition.

Welcome to today’s What is The Future For Cities podcast and its Research episode; my name is Fanni, and today we will introduce a research by summarising it. Speaker 1: So today we are exploring a central question raised by a really comprehensive review of the current literature. Does crop diversification actually lead to climate-related resilience for rural households? I mean, we know that planting a variety of crops creates ecological redundancy, but we need to figure out if that translates into actual systemic livelihood resilience against severe shocks. My position is that, yes, crop diversification is a proven, highly effective engine for building agricultural and livelihood resilience through ecological redundancy and risk mitigation.
Speaker 2: And, well, my position is that while diversification reliably improves baseline yields and income, the evidence linking it to true systemic human resilience is methodologically flawed and just ignores critical sociopolitical realities.
Speaker 1: So to really understand this, we need to start with the fundamental mechanism. How does biodiversity act as a buffer against environmental fluctuations? In an agroecosystem, the golden rule is that you want your species to outnumber your functions.
Speaker 2: Meaning the jobs that need getting done in the field?
Speaker 1: Right. Like retaining water in the soil, fixing nitrogen, or stopping weeds. If you only have one plant doing one job and a sudden heatwave wipes that plant out, then the entire system collapses. But if you have ecological redundancy, multiple plants capable of fulfilling those same functions, then if one fails, another is already there to step in.
Speaker 2: The system survives.
Speaker 1: Exactly. And we know this isn’t just theoretical. The Bill Yuan meta-analysis is a massive piece of literature that looked at over three thousand seven hundred field experiments globally.
Speaker 2: That’s a huge data set.
Speaker 1: It really is. And they mapped the outcomes of strategies like agroforestry and intercropping, finding undeniably positive outcomes across the board for yields and environmental health. Crop diversification is essentially a natural index fund. By not putting all your seeds in one basket, ecological redundancy ensures that if one crop fails due to climate stress, another fulfills its function.
Speaker 2: I come at it from a different way. I actually completely agree with the index fund analogy, but it highlights exactly where this theory breaks down. How so? Well, an index fund is a fantastic financial tool, but if the entire global economy crashes, your index fund still plummets. And more importantly, if you are a marginalized investor barely scraping by, an index fund doesn’t rewrite the fundamental rules of the economy that keep you in poverty. We agree on the first half of the impact pathway. The data clearly shows mixing crops improves yields. It provides a temporary income boost. But the leap from, “My soil is healthier,” to, “My household is structurally resilient,” is a massive, unsubstantiated assumption.
Speaker 1: How is it unsubstantiated? If the field produces food during a drought- The household has food. That is the definition of resilience.
Speaker 2: Because having extra grain in the silo this season doesn’t mean you can survive compounding multi-year shocks. Researchers like Feliciano and Onyeneke point out that a temporary income bump does not automatically equate to the deeper pillars of resilience In the literature, true resilience requires buffer capacity, self-organization, and adaptive capacity. Planting three crops gives you a slight buffer capacity for one season, sure, but it does absolutely nothing for the community’s ability to coordinate a response or structurally adapt for the future.
Speaker 1: I’d push back on the idea that it only provides a single season buffer. Let’s look at empirical long-term success. Gauldin and colleagues ran a thirty-one-year study in Ontario. They looked at combining a maize soybean rotation with reduced tillage. During hot and dry years, that diversified system increased yields by up to twenty-two percent compared to monocrops. That is empirical evidence of a system absorbing a shock over decades.
Speaker 2: But we are supposed to be talking about human resilience, not plant survival.
Speaker 1: They are inextricably linked. Look at the doubled up legume system in Malawi. Farmers intercrop grain legumes with pigeon peas. The pigeon peas have incredibly deep tap roots, so they rehabilitate the soil fertility while reducing erosion. Plus, they provide an edible crop late in the season when food is scarce. The farmer gets food security directly from the biological function of the plant.
Speaker 2: I’m sorry, but I just don’t buy that. Let me tell you why. I completely agree the pigeon pea survives the drought and fixes nitrogen, but does the farmer survive the downstream economic shocks? You are conflating agronomic success with human resilience. Hoofnagle conducted a review of a hundred and ninety-three field studies and found a glaring lack of any coherent theoretical framework for human impact. Almost half of those studies only looked at biotic or abiotic variables.
Speaker 1: Meaning they just measured the physical environment?
Speaker 2: Exactly. They were out there counting bugs and measuring plant height. They entirely ignored economic variables. Measuring how well a pigeon pea fixes nitrogen tells us absolutely nothing about whether the farmer can afford healthcare when an illness sweeps through the village. You cannot measure human resilience with a soil moisture probe.
Speaker 1: But wait, a guaranteed crop yield inherently protects the farmer’s wallet, right? And the literature absolutely connects those dots. Look at Michler and Josephson’s data covering households in Uganda and Ethiopia. They found that households maintaining a diverse basket of crops actively reduce their probability of falling into poverty compared to specialized cash croppers. The mechanism there is perfectly clear. A diverse crop basket smooths consumption.
Speaker 2: What do you mean by smooths consumption?
Speaker 1: It means instead of getting one massive pay check at the end of the year, which might be zero if a pest arrives, you have a steady, predictable stream of food and income throughout the year. It protects the baseline, so they don’t have to sell off core assets to survive a bad month.
Speaker 2: It makes sense on paper, but when you look at reality, diversification can completely backfire if you ignore broader market dynamics. Let’s talk about Meldrum’s study in Bolivia. Farmers wanted to adapt to the shifting climate, so they shifted toward commercial sweet potatoes and quinoa.
Speaker 1: Driven by the international quinoa boom.
Speaker 2: Exactly. But to grow those, they stopped planting their traditional bitter potatoes. Those indigenous potatoes have compounds that make them incredibly resistant to severe frost. Communities used to freeze-dry them into chuño, which stores for years. It was the ultimate historically proven buffer against climate extremes.
Speaker 1: I see where this is going.
Speaker 2: Yeah, the market didn’t want bitter potatoes, so farmers chased the sweet potato money, lost their local genetic diversity, and when severe frost hit, the commercial crops failed. The Chuno reserves were gone. They fell into a maladaptation trap.
Speaker 1: That’s an interesting point, though I would frame it differently. What you’re describing is a market failure, not a failure of diversification as an ecological principle. The core concept that having frost-resistant storable crops protects you remains completely sound.
Speaker 2: But the economic reality-
Speaker 1: We see this exact same structural trap in the US Corn Belt. Roche McNally documented how farmers there are trapped in intensive monocropping of corn and soy. Because of policy lock-in, misaligned economic incentives practically forbid them from changing practices. If a farmer makes a poor diversification choice, it points to a desperate need to fix the market, not discard the ecological principle of redundancy.
Speaker 2: I agree that fixing the market is necessary, but even then you are missing the most critical gap in this entire theory, the social and political dimensions. Altieri and Reynolds highlight this. Ecological resilience means absolutely nothing without social resilience. Let’s look at gender dynamics in East Africa.
Speaker 1: How does crop diversification negatively impact gender dynamics?
Speaker 2: Because agricultural interventions don’t happen in a vacuum. When an agricultural program introduces new diverse crops intended for the market, male-headed households almost universally dominate access to the land, credit, and extension services.
Speaker 1: So the men take control of the income stream.
Speaker 2: Exactly. Even if women provided the labour, the so-called resilience generated bypasses female-headed households entirely. The overall household income might be higher on paper, but if your intervention widens the gender wealth gap, you haven’t built community resilience. You’ve just shifted the vulnerability to someone else.
Speaker 1: I see why you think that, but let me give you a different perspective. That points to a need for a refined theory of change, not an abandonment of the practice. Look at the Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index study in Bangladesh.
Speaker 2: How did they approach it differently?
Speaker 1: They didn’t just hand out seeds. They explicitly designed interventions to empower women with decision-making authority over production. And when women gained agency, it actually led to much more robust crop diversification. They systematically shifted away from male-dominated cereal production toward nutrient-dense vegetables. They inherently prioritize dietary diversity over single crop profits. So social resilience can be built through crop diversification.
Speaker 2: But that’s exactly my point. The resilience didn’t come from the seeds. It came from empowering the women. The diversification was a symptom of the social resilience, not the cause of it.
Speaker 1: I’d argue they reinforce each other. Like, consider community seed banks. When farmers establish local seed banks and test varieties themselves, they aren’t just achieving agronomic redundancy. The act of managing that bank builds self-organization and local institutions.
Speaker 2: They can build social capital, yes, but my argument is that this holistic approach is the exception in the literature, not the rule. The mainstream narrative assumes you can just introduce different seeds and declare climate vulnerability solved. We need a transition to circular agriculture.
Speaker 1: Let’s define circular agriculture for the listener, just to be precise.
Speaker 2: I mean a holistic system where nothing is wasted. Crop residue feeds the livestock, livestock manure fertilizes the soil, water is recycled, and crucially, the community has diverse income streams off the farm. The physical crop is just one tiny piece of a massive socioeconomic puzzle. You cannot achieve resilience purely through crop genetics.
Speaker 1: I concede that the scientific community needs a much more rigorous, multidimensional framework to measure resilience. We clearly need to track social indicators just as closely as soil moisture. However, I maintain that the foundation of agroecological redundancy remains the most viable, scalable baseline we have. Without the pigeon peas fixing the nitrogen, no amount of social engineering will save a failing harvest. The biology has to work first.
Speaker 2: And I agree, agrobiodiversity is a uniquely powerful tool, but we have to stop treating it as magic. True resilience requires equitable access to land, supportive policies, and off-farm opportunities. If the socioeconomic realities aren’t resilient, the genetics of the crops won’t matter because the farmers won’t be there to harvest them.
Speaker 1: It really comes down to looking closely at those specific layered socioeconomic realities on the ground, rather than assuming plant genetics solve human problems in isolation.
