Since we are investigating the future of cities, I thought it would be interesting to see how freight activities increasingly impact the functional and aesthetic quality of metropolitan environments. This article suggests that while functional and morphological aspects are well-studied, the social, perceptual, and visual impacts of logistics remain significantly overlooked.

Welcome to today’s What is The Future For Cities podcast and its Research episode; my name is Fanni, and today we will introduce a research by summarising it. Today, when you try to navigate a dense city centre during the afternoon delivery rush, you realize the public realm has basically become a heavily contested battleground.
Speaker 1: Exactly. And the tension between that legacy infrastructure and modern demand is exactly where we are focusing today. We are examining a systematic literature review by researchers Sun, Tavaszi, and Van Duin, and they map out this incredibly urgent collision course between city logistics, so the machinery of urban freight and last-mile delivery, and urban design.
Speaker 2: And to unpack how we actually solve this crisis, the source material evaluates the situation through urban planner Matthew Carmona’s six dimensions of urban design. So that’s the functional, morphological, social, perceptual, temporal, and visual dimensions.

Speaker 2: And I will be arguing that this efficiency-first mindset is the very root of the problem. True integration can only happen if we prioritize the heavily neglected social, perceptual, and visual dimensions to protect the actual human experience of the city.
Speaker 1: Let me ground my position in the immediate physical reality here. Right now, logistics put immense, undeniable pressure on our street networks. Every single day, we see delivery trucks double parked and blocking traffic.
Speaker 2: Oh, everywhere. It’s constant.
Speaker 1: Or cargo bikes squeezing into narrow pedestrian walkways, and massive intersection congestion. The reason the functional dimension, meaning how things physically move and where we allocate space, has to take priority is because the crisis is fundamentally spatial.
Speaker 2: I hear what you’re saying, but-
Speaker 1: Let me just finish this thought. If the physical network fails, the entire city stops We absolutely have to redesign our street grids and embed new logistics hubs into the physical layout of our neighbourhoods before we can even worry about the aesthetic or psychological layers.
Speaker 2: I’m sorry, but treating the city as just a giant movement and storage puzzle completely ignores the people living inside that puzzle. What planners and, frankly, algorithms are entirely missing right now is the human impact.
Speaker 1: But the human impact is traffic gridlock.
Speaker 2: It’s more than that, though. A perfectly efficient street layout means absolutely nothing if the visual degradation from logistics facilities ruins a neighbourhood’s character or if the psychological stress of constantly dodging delivery robots on the sidewalk just alienates pedestrians. The human experience has to dictate the design, not just an operational algorithm trying to shave ten seconds off a delivery route.
Speaker 1: I see why you think that, but let me give you a different perspective. Let’s zoom in on where this conflict is most visible. The edge of the street, the curb.
Speaker 2: The battleground.
Speaker 1: Exactly. The research we are looking at highlights a severe battle for the curb between freight, active travel like cycling, and ride-hailing services. This is the city’s hardware interface, and it requires a functional solution first. Think of managing the curb like a game of Tetris, where the blocks never stop falling. If the baseline geometry is flawed, say a delivery van pulls up, but the loading zone is too small or occupied by a parked car, that van sits there for just five minutes too long. It forces the next delivery van to double park in the bike lane. That pushes cyclists out into moving traffic, which causes cars to brake suddenly, creating this shockwave of congestion that blocks the nearest intersection. The whole physical system cascades into failure. So proper functional allocation, logically sized loading bays isn’t just an efficiency metric. It is the absolute prerequisite for the street to be safe.
Speaker 2: I understand the Tetris analogy, and cascading traffic failures are a real physical danger. But you’re talking about managing parked vehicles as if that solves the holistic experience of the street, and it doesn’t.
Speaker 1: How does it not?
Speaker 2: When we look at the perceptual dimension, how people actually feel navigating these spaces, the functional allocation of a curb doesn’t address the psychological friction happening just a few feet away on the sidewalk.
Speaker 1: Psychological friction. Walk me through what you mean by that in this context.
Speaker 2: Let’s look at the rise of autonomous delivery robots. A logistical algorithm might functionally map a path for a robot down a busy sidewalk, mathematically proving there are, say, exactly thirty-six inches of clearance, which is enough physical space for both a robot and a pedestrian to pass.
Speaker 1: So functionally, it works.
Speaker 2: But the human being doesn’t experience the street as a math equation. When you are walking your dog and a machine rolls toward you, there is a fundamental question of trust. Does the machine sensor see me? Will it stop? Do I need to step into the street to let it pass?
Speaker 1: There is definitely an unpredictability to new technology. I’ll give you that.
Speaker 2: It’s more than unpredictability, though. It fundamentally alters pedestrian behaviour. Studies cited in the paper show that interactions between humans and delivery robots are driven by stress, confusion, and perceived safety.
Speaker 1: But that’s just an adjustment period.
Speaker 2: I don’t think so. If a pedestrian feels like they have to be hypervigilant just to walk down their own block, the space is no longer a public amenity. It becomes a hostile environment. That perceptual experience cannot be solved by painting a new functional line on the pavement.
Speaker 1: Okay, I agree that machines on sidewalks create friction, but those exact sidewalk conflicts are precisely why we need better morphological integration.
Speaker 2: We should probably define what you mean by morphological here, because in urban planning, that term covers a lot of ground.
Speaker 1: The morphological dimension refers to the actual physical shape, layout, and density of the built environment. So the buildings, the blocks, the street networks.
Speaker 2: Right now, a lot of delivery traffic comes from massive warehouses located on the outskirts of town.
Speaker 1: Which means long delivery routes.
Speaker 2: Exactly.
Speaker 1: But the literature discusses a concept called proximity logistics. By bringing smaller logistics hubs directly into the city, embedding parcel lockers, micro hubs, and dark stores into dense mixed-use neighbourhoods, we radically alter the morphology of the supply chain.
Speaker 2: Essentially bringing the warehouse directly to the consumer’s block.
Speaker 1: Yes, and structurally it’s a huge win. It shortens delivery trips dramatically. It aligns where the freight needs to go directly with the local land use patterns. That means fewer long-haul vans crossing the entire city, which directly reduces the very traffic conflicts and sidewalk congestion you’re worried about.
Speaker 2: Smoother for the package maybe, but at what cost to the neighbourhood?
Speaker 1: I think the cost is minimal compared to the benefits.
Speaker 2: Let me tell you why I disagree. This brings us to a massive blind spot identified in the research, which is the visual dimension. The review explicitly states that planners are essentially ignoring the aesthetic impact of urban logistics. You call an embedded dark store a morphological win, but let’s talk about why they deeply degrade the visual environment.
Speaker 1: Are a few parcel lockers really destroying the aesthetic fabric of a city? Really?
Speaker 2: It’s much more intrusive than a few lockers. Think about a dark store, a grocery fulfillment centre that doesn’t allow public customers. When a logistics company takes over a retail storefront on a vibrant main street, what happens? They black out or frost the windows. The facade goes entirely blank. You have harsh industrial security lighting spilling onto the sidewalk at all hours, and stacks of plastic delivery crates permanently piled near the entrance. It completely destroys the distinctiveness and character of the place. It’s not just about window shopping. It’s about community identity and wayfinding. Placing a dark store in a mixed-use neighbourhood based purely on distance efficiency is like dropping a massive humming cellular tower into the middle of a historic public plaza. Sure, it distributes the signal perfectly. Functionally, it is optimal, but visually and culturally, it’s a disaster. And that leads directly into the temporal dimension, which is how these facilities age over time.
Speaker 1: Cities are dynamic, though. The facilities will adapt to the needs of the time.
Speaker 2: But how do they adapt? A traditional retail storefront relies on foot traffic, which creates a predictable human rhythm of activity throughout the day. A dark store operates on the rhythm of an algorithm. It creates intense, unpredictable bursts of delivery traffic at random hours, completely disrupting the neighbourhood’s natural flow. And wait. Furthermore, when the e-commerce algorithm decides that specific location is no longer profitable, the company can abandon it overnight, leaving a dead, empty shell in the middle of a residential block. The pursuit of immediate operational efficiency completely ignores how spaces age, adapt, or become obsolete.
Speaker 1: That’s an interesting point, though I would frame it differently. I hear your concerns about visual blight and the rhythm of the street, but let’s look at the broader impact, because efficiency isn’t just about corporate profit margins or abstract algorithms. Efficiency is deeply tied to the social dimension you are advocating for.
Speaker 2: I struggle to see how top-down efficiency serves the social dimension. Usually, hyper-efficiency is the enemy of social well-being.
Speaker 1: Think about the twenty thirty Agenda for Sustainable Development, specifically the goals around sustainable cities. Efficient logistics networks provide essential services: groceries, medical supplies, daily goods. They get these to millions of citizens. When we optimize the routing of delivery vans to eliminate unnecessary idling, we directly reduce the localized emissions and noise pollution that plague urban neighbourhoods. Fixing the function inherently creates a cleaner, safer environment for everyone. Function serves the social good. But I still maintain that the functional and morphological realities are the foundational layer we just cannot bypass.
Speaker 2: You think they still come first?
Speaker 1: I do. If we do not implement data-driven curb allocation, logically sized loading zones, and physically integrated facilities, the sheer staggering volume of e-commerce will bring our streets to a complete standstill. Without that functional baseline functioning correctly, the city simply ceases to move.
Speaker 2: And my position remains that a city that moves efficiently but feels alienating, inequitable, and visually hostile is a profound failure of urban design. Until we elevate the perceptual, social, and visual experiences of the people living in these spaces to the exact same level of importance as supply chain efficiency, our solutions will only create more fractured communities.
Speaker 1: Despite our different starting points, we are arriving at a shared conclusion here, which really mirrors the key takeaway from the research itself. The historical wall between the logistics industry and urban planners is crumbling. It has to.
Speaker 2: Absolutely. Treating urban freight as an isolated supply chain issue is no longer viable. It is fundamentally a cross-disciplinary design challenge. Balancing the raw, undeniable demand for goods with the human need for safe, vibrant public spaces requires us to look at all of these dimensions simultaneously. We have to design for the whole system.
Speaker 1: The days of the neat, compartmentalized city map are officially over. The streets are alive, complex, and highly contested. The next time you step out your front door, take a hard look at the delivery bays, the sidewalk robots, and the glowing windows of the parcel lockers. Look at where the physical space is allocated and who is being asked to move out of the way.
Speaker 2: And ask yourself, is your city being designed for the package or for the person?
